Many companies that sponsor and participate in motorsport now recognize the need to take urgent action. Among them is PETRONAS, which as the Title and Technical Partner to the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, hopes to pioneer by taking concrete steps towards creating a more sustainable future for Formula 1. Neste, along with its German partner TOOL-FUEL Services, is supplying PETRONAS with renewable diesel (also known as “HVO100”) to help reduce the team’s freight emissions.

The Mercedes team and its logistics partners are targeting a reduction of 200 tons of CO over the course of nine races throughout Europe in the current F1 season. The team’s fleet of Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks, responsible for transporting the necessary freight for each race, will play a crucial role, being powered by renewable diesel for their entire European journey. The expected travel distance spans 9,000 to 10,000 kilometers, starting from the UK and Germany and venturing through Europe. Replacing fossil fuel use with Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ can result in an emissions reduction of up to 90%* over the fuel’s life cycle compared to fossil diesel use.

This effort aligns with Neste's broader goal of assisting customers in reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by a minimum of 20 million tons of CO2e annually by 2030. Neste MY Renewable Diesel, produced from 100% renewable raw materials, is a significant tool in achieving this target. Crucially, renewable diesel is a drop-in fuel, requiring no modifications to engines or fuel infrastructure, representing a lower-emission solution that is both immediate and effective.

Neste’s fuel distribution partner in Germany, TOOL-FUEL, will be in charge of distributing the renewable diesel to PETRONAS as part of their onward supply to the Mercedes team.

“We are very proud of the trust placed in us by Neste,” said Alexander Stöhr, Managing Director at TOOL-FUEL Services, calling the partnership a pivotal step and a “potential breakthrough.”

Jörg Hübeler, Head of Market Development Europe & APAC at Neste, also speaks highly of the collaboration with TOOL-FUEL. “The cooperation agreements between Neste and TOOL-FUEL mark an important step in increasing the potential for decarbonization in the transport sector in the German market,” Hübeler stated.

The collaboration between Neste, PETRONAS, and TOOL-FUEL symbolizes a commitment to transition towards more sustainable, lower-emission mobility solutions that are not only innovative but also available today.

*) The GHG emission reduction varies depending on the region-specific legislation that provides the methodology for the calculations (e.g. EU RED II 2018/2001/EU for Europe and US California LCFS for the US), and the raw material mix used to manufacture the product for each market.
