Neste is a purpose-driven company, focused on creating a healthier planet for our children. This purpose has been our guiding star during our transformation from an oil company to a renewable products company.

Neste is taking another step forward on this journey. Today, we announced that we have signed The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be carbon neutral by 2040 — a decade faster than the targets set in the United Nations Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

This is a great fit, and we are proud to be the first energy company to sign the pledge. Neste has already set two ambitious climate commitments: helping customers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions with our renewable and circular solutions by at least 20 million tons annually by 2030, and reach carbon neutral production by 2035.As a signatory of The Climate Pledge, Neste will:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.

  • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business change and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions and other carbon emission elimination strategies.

  • Take actions to neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent and socially beneficial offsets that achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

“The climate crisis is one of the biggest challenges of our times. It will not be solved with one single solution, but calls for utilizing all available solutions and innovating new ones. This is team play. By signing The Climate Pledge, Neste is excited to join a community of forward thinking businesses to share expertise on how to accomplish this.”Peter Vanacker, President and CEO of Neste

Reducing our carbon footprint

Neste is continuing progress towards our commitment of achieving carbon neutral production operations by 2035, which we set in March 2020.

We’ve already identified more than 70 different ways to decrease greenhouse gas emissions from our production operations, including improving our energy efficiency,  using more electricity from renewable sources and exploring new, less carbon intensive production methods.

"This is an enormous undertaking, one which will require new ways of thinking, innovation and plenty of cooperation."

Peter Vanacker

As this work continues, Neste will share learnings with other signatories of The Climate Pledge and tap into their collective expertise to find new, creative ways to potentially reduce its carbon footprint even further.  Click here for more information about Neste’s commitment to achieving carbon neutral production operations.

Reducing customers’ greenhouse gas emissions

To help customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons of CO2 equivalent annually by 2030,  Neste is focused on providing even more renewable and circular solutions. We offer renewable diesel for road transportation, sustainable aviation fuel for air travel, and now renewable hydrocarbons for manufacturing plastics and chemicals. Our renewable hydrocarbons can replace fossil oil and natural gas in the production of clothing, plastics, and many other everyday materials. All of these renewable products are available right now and work seamlessly with today’s engines, fueling infrastructure, and manufacturing equipment and processes. They provide an affordable and easy way for businesses to achieve their climate goals and for society to accelerate the transition to a carbon neutral future. The world today IS already powered by sustainable fuels. They are already available on the market and in use by customers all over the world. A lot of research and innovation have already gone into making these sustainable solutions a reality.  Over the past five years, Neste's renewable products reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by around 40 million tons - roughly the same climate benefits as building and operating nearly 8,400 wind turbines or planting more than 643 million trees.
