Liquefied waste plastic

Plastic waste as feedstock | Neste

Neste is advancing chemical recycling of plastic waste. We consider chemical recycling a complementary technology to existing recycling technologies. That is why we are targeting plastic waste that is otherwise hard to recycle, e.g. via mechanical recycling.

We are sourcing liquefied waste plastic from various suppliers. We have already concluded several processing runs with liquefied waste plastic at our Porvoo refinery. By now, we have processed more than 6,000 tons of liquefied waste plastic in total. Further runs with increased volumes are ongoing.

Turning liquefied plastic waste into raw materials for new plastics

Although liquefied waste plastic resembles crude oil, it contains impurities and chemical compositions that limit its use, as they lead to risks of corrosion, process inefficiency and poor end-product quality. While unprocessed liquefied waste plastic is feasible in limited campaign runs, scaling up continuous processing will require the pretreatment and upgrading step to remove impurities and optimize the chemical composition.

We are therefore building respective facilities. In June 2023, Neste made a final investment decision to commence construction of upgrading facilities in Porvoo in the course of project PULSE. With the investment of 111 million euros, Neste will build the capacity to upgrade 150,000 tons of liquefied waste plastic per year. The new facility is planned to be finalized in the first half of 2025.

Our future goal is to process more than one million tons of plastic waste per year. We are gradually looking to increase our capacities to get there.
