Bottles of fossil diesel and Neste MY Renewable Diesel

Why choose Neste MY Renewable Diesel over biodiesel?

Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ excels in cold weather and in storage. With no additional investment into the infrastructure or modification of your fossil diesel-fueled fleet, Neste MY gives you a commercial advantage.

Neste MY vs biodiesel

Both fuels are made from 100% renewable raw materials. However, Neste MY is pure Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO100) – a hydrocarbon diesel chemically very similar to fossil diesel.

This gives Neste MY impressive versatility. Based on our proprietary NEXBTL technology, it is ready to use with any diesel engine. Simply refuel your fleet today with Neste MY neat, or blended with any ratio of fossil diesel.

A HVO100 fuel – HVO in its purest form – it does not attract water. With proper handling and storage, there is minimal risk of deterioration or microbial growth, leading to longer storage capabilities.

Conversely, Biodiesel is a Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) product and NOT a hydrocarbon. This impacts its compatibility. Most OEMs recommend using no more than 20%* biodiesel in a blend with HVO or fossil diesel.

Giving you a competitive difference

Neste is looking especially for used cooking oil (UCO) suppliers capable of offering, on average, more than 100 tons of oil per month.
Neste innovation

Neste MY Renewable Diesel is based on our proprietary NEXBTL technology. Patented in 1997, it turns a wide variety of low-quality waste and residues into fuel and other renewable products.

Whatever the renewable raw materials used, the high quality of the final product is guaranteed.

Biofuels produced using esterification cannot match Neste MY’s consistency. The quality of FAME biofuels also differ depending on the raw materials.

Superior cetane

The higher the cetane number, the better your ignition performance. Biodiesels have a cetane score between 50 and 60. But with a number above 70, Neste MY Renewable Diesel gives you superior performance. It starts better than biodiesel in cold conditions, combusts with maximum efficiency, and potentially helps keep engines cleaner.

No storage time limit

Unlike biodiesel, Neste MY Renewable Diesel does not attract water. With the right handling and storage, there is minimal risk of microbial growth – or a deterioration in fuel quality. It can be stored for longer periods, making logistics simpler – and ensuring you get perfect performance every refuel.

Everyday advantages

Businesses that use Neste MY Renewable Diesel enjoy a number of advantages over those that use biodiesel.

Importantly, both fuels are made from renewable sources and produce lower GHG emissions than fossil diesel.

However, biodiesel (B100) is not approved by original engine manufacturers (OEMs). Poor performance in cold temperatures limits its usage around the world. Plus, since it is often blended with fossil diesel, especially in the United States (B5 or B20) and EU (B7), its ability to cut users’ GHG emissions is reduced.

In contrast, Neste MY Renewable Diesel is chemically similar to fossil diesel. You can use it with any blend of fossil diesel. Better still, you can use it pure and enjoy its full potential for reducing GHG emissions by up to 75%** over its lifecycle, compared to fossil diesel.

Neste MY is also the first certified TOP TIER™ renewable diesel fuel, a standard endorsed by leading engine manufacturers, including General Motors, Volkswagen, Detroit Diesel, Navistar, and Ford.

FAQ

What is the difference between Neste MY Renewable Diesel and biodiesel?

Both Neste MY Renewable Diesel and biodiesel are made from 100% renewable raw materials.

However, Neste MY is a pure Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO100). This means it is a hydrocarbon diesel chemically very similar to fossil diesel, and can be used without any modifications to your fleet – either neat (HVO 100) or blended at any ratio of fossil diesel.

It has a high cetane number, and starts up more smoothly. Since it does not attract water, you can also store it for longer periods without risk of deterioration or microbial growth.

Conversely, because biodiesel is a Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) product and NOT a hydrocarbon, most OEMs recommend using no more than 20%* biodiesel in a blend with HVO or fossil diesel. It also performs poorly in cold conditions, and has a shelf life of just six months.

What is the difference between Neste MY Renewable Diesel and fossil diesel?

Neste MY Renewable Diesel has a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel – but this is where the likeness ends.

Neste MY is made from 100% renewable raw materials, and produces up to 75%** less greenhouse gas emissions over the fuel’s lifecycle compared to fossil diesel.

* The European standard for diesel (EN590) limits the proportion of biodiesel (FAME EN14214) to max. 7%. In fact, engine and vehicle manufacturers widely support the development of HVO fuels as a way to increase diesel fuels's renewable content to reduce emissions without the concerns associated with FAMEs.

** Lifecycle greenhouse gas emission reductions compared to fossil diesel and based on current feedstock pathways. Calculation method complies with the LCFS CA-GREET 3.0.
