- PVG’s new lower-emission heating liquid offers consumers in Europe a more sustainable alternative
- Neste supplies PVG with co-processed odorless heating kerosene to be used as a replacement for commonly used conventional fossil-based kerosenes
Neste is offering a new co-processed odorless heating kerosene as a lower-emission solution for portable liquid fuel heaters. The first order was delivered at the turn of the year to PVG, the European market leader in home climate solutions, having its own liquids production plant in Ghent, Belgium. This new heating liquid for portable liquid fuel heaters will be launched to the consumer market in the next winter at the end of 2024.
PVG’s next generation heating liquid, based on the co-processed odorless heating kerosene from Neste, serves the users of liquid fuel heaters in Europe. It offers a more sustainable alternative to fossil-based heating fuels as raw materials from 100% renewable sources have been allocated to replace fossil raw materials during its production. The lower-emission heating liquid is, therefore, a solution for households seeking to reduce the carbon footprint of their heating.
“The next generation heating liquids offer our consumers the highest quality, while being safe, efficient, odorless, and more sustainable than the fossil-based ones. I’m happy and proud that PVG is initiating the sustainable future for Qlima heating liquids,“ says Kristin Gehre, CEO of PVG.
“Neste wants to support its customers with solutions that help them achieve their sustainability targets and develop more sustainable products for their customers. We have been developing a wide variety of lower-emission solutions for decades, and this is the newest addition to our offering,” says Ari Vouti from Neste’s Oil Products business unit.
The chemical composition and performance of Neste’s new lower-emission heating kerosene for fuel heaters is similar to conventionally used heater fluids. It is suitable for all portable home heaters running on heating fluid, with no need for modifications to the heater.
Neste’s co-processed solutions reduce dependency on fossil resources
Co-processing of renewable raw materials is one of the solutions to addressing the ongoing climate change through reducing the society’s reliance on fossil resources. Neste’s co-processed odorless heating kerosene for PVG’s lower-emission heating liquids offers a 50 to 85%* reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the product’s life cycle when compared to a fossil product** as it has been produced with renewable raw materials on a mass balance basis.
Neste’s co-processed heating kerosene is an ISCC PLUS certified product. Renewable content is allocated to co-processed products according to ISCC PLUS mass balancing approach.
*) The exact greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction for the certified product depends on raw materials used.
**) Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calculations for Neste’s co-processed odorless heating kerosene covers emissions from raw material extraction, refining of the heating kerosene, all raw material and product logistics along the supply chain, and combustion at use. Other downstream processing and use phase emissions are not included. In line with EU RED II guidelines for GHG emission calculations, the carbon emissions from the use of the heating kerosene amount to zero as the amount of bio-based carbon dioxide released upon combustion equals the amount that renewable raw materials have absorbed earlier. Fossil product: Fossil naphtha, European average. Minimum value selected from LCA databases (Sphera 2023.1 and ecoinvent 3.9.1). GWP value covers the entire supply chain of naphtha from cradle to gate (refinery). Additionally, theoretical CO2 release at end-of-life is included, based on the carbon content of the product. Fossil end-of-life emissions are considered for the fossil product to enable a meaningful comparison with the renewable product. Note that the fossil reference value does not include product transport, further processing or use phase emissions.
